Dee A. Dadik has been a quilt maker, pattern designer, teacher, quilt restorer, researcher of quilt history and collector of quilts for over 3 decades.  Nine years ago, after retiring from her own custom dressmaking business, she added quilt appraising, lecturing, and judging to her quilt interests and started “I Have a Quilt…” as a business venture.  She has appraised quilts in the Midwest and for internationally known art quilters and has lectured for guilds, businesses, and historical societies on the history, dating, care of quilts and why you need to have quilts appraised.  She appraises antique, new and art quilts for insurance replacement, fair market value and donation value.

To support the knowledge necessary to appraise and lecture, Dee has taken classes and studied dating, construction, regional differences, appraising, legal issues, ethics, care, preservation, social history and textile history.  She regularly participates in continuing education classes, independent study and has numerous activities that keep her aware of current prices.  These experiences plus an extensive reference library help her to appraise your quilts and give you information that will bring a greater appreciation and understanding of what you own.

Dee has been involved in many guilds, holding office and serving as head of many committees.  Currently she is serving as Secretary for the Professional Association of Appraisers of Quilted Textiles.  Volunteering her services for charitable causes is also a part of her interests.

As a recipient of the American Quilt Study Group’s scholarship award for 2003, she is actively researching the relationship of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and quilts in the Ohio area.

 APPRAISAL SERVICES

APPRAISAL DAYS/EVENINGS: I appraise antique, newly made and art quilts.  The appraisals are confidential so scheduling an appointment of 30 minutes (one for each quilt) is advised.  Written appraisals or verbal evaluations can be done.  Transportation fees may be charged.

VERBAL EVALUATION

·         Given to clarify age, use and care of the quilt.  No dollar value may be given.

·         Sometimes the verbal evaluation will need to become a written appraisal when

the quilt is examined closely and judged to be of significant value.

WRITTEN APPRAISAL

·         Given for insurance, donation, or fair market (resale) values.

·         History from owner is recorded.

·         Photographs are taken for my records and that of the owner.

·         Quilt is examined in detail for fabric style and color, pattern, size, quality of construction and

       quilting, and condition..                                                                                             .

·         Written appraisal, care instructions, and photo are mailed to owner within

two weeks as time to do additional research may be needed.

APPRAISAL DAYS/EVENINGS – FOR YOUR INCOME

SEWING ROOM APPRAISALS

Don’t undervalue what you have.

As a professional or a hobbyist, you may have a large investment in your sewing equipment, fabric, thread, and books.  Look around and take a minute to estimate how much it would cost to replace what is now a part of your quilting “stuff”… more than you think (or would like to admit).

An appraisal of your sewing room will accomplish several things:

·         You will have to organize the contents of the room.

·         You will receive a professional appraisal that is a legal document for insurance purposes.

·         You will have a greater appreciation of your “stash” etc..

Call for further information and discussion.

 QUILT SHOW JUDGING

DESCRIPTION:   Discuss with you the purpose and theme of your show and how you would like the awards to be given.  Judging generally takes place the day that a show is hung or the day before.  With the assistance of show helpers and scribes, all quilts in your given categories will be evaluated and the prescribed awards given.

A judged show is meant to be educational both for the quilters and the viewers.

·         Experienced, unbiased eyes can determine the comparative attributes of each quilt and choose the winners for a particular show.

·         Often a quilt will win in one show and not the next because the competition

       changes.

·         Comments on each entrant’s form are formulated with a positive approach. This is meant to encourage the quilter to continue to improve his/her chosen art form and to share it with the public.

FEES:

·         The fee for judging is based on the size of the show.

·         Mileage fees are added to the above-negotiated fee.

·         Housing fees are added, if necessary, because of distance and/or timing.

PROCEDURE:

·         Please contact me at the address below well in advance of your need.

·         Send a copy of any show information, forms, and/or contracts that you have prepared.

·         I will compare your forms to standard forms and contact you to discuss any changes that might enhance the process and to finalize plans for your show.
