Sue Reich became an AQS quilt appraiser in 2003. She began quiltmaking as a
child, and developed her skills in the historic documentation of quilts, and
quilt appraisal after moving to Connecticut in 1980. She has lectured widely on
many quilt-related subjects including appraising, World War II era quilts,
Connecticut quilts, Crazy Quilts, Multitudinous Pieced quilts, and floral
quilts. Her extensive collection of World War II quilts has been exhibited at
the Quilter’s Hall of Fame, the American Museum of Science and Energy in
Oakridge, TN, and the New England Quilt Museum. Sue has been guest curator at
quilt shows and exhibits in museums and historical societies throughout
Connecticut, New England and at the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society in
Paducah, KY.
Since 1991, Sue has been on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Quilt
Search Project. In 2002, she co-authored “Quilts and Quiltmakers Covering
Connecticut,” a culmination of the Project’s documentation of over 3,000 quilts
in Connecticut. In 2007, Sue compiled newspaper articles of women quilting
throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These primary sources were
published in two books; “Quilting News of Yesteryear: 1,000 Pieces and Counting”
and “Quilting News of Yesteryear: Crazy as a Bed-Quilt” by Schiffer Publishing,
Ltd. In addition, Sue has authored articles for Blanket Statements, the
quarterly newsletter of the American Quilt Study Group, and Fons and Porter’s
Love of Quilting.
Her membership in quilt-related organizations includes PAAQT, the Meetinghouse
Quilters, The American Quilters Society, the American Quilt Study Group, and the
New England Quilt Museum.
