As a
service to the quilt world, the American Quilter's Society (AQS) has
developed a program to certify appraisers who are qualified to give
insurance and fair market value to quilts, related textiles, and
wearable art.
Classes
As part
of this program, AQS offers classes of instruction to individuals
interested in gaining appraisal knowledge and skill. Classes are offered
annually at the AQS show in Paducah on appraisal process for insurance,
fair market, and donation appraisals. Occasionally, these classes are
also taught at other quilt related venues; the locations and dates are
determined by the Certification Committee.
Testing
Each year during the AQS show, the Appraisal Certification Committee
tests acceptable candidates for their knowledge and expertise of
fabrics, dates, construction techniques, their ability to recognize
patterns and regional influences, and on their awareness of quilt
values. Testing is comprised of written and oral exams. The
certification candidate must also sign and adhere to a code of ethical
standards.
